I score wellness retreats for a living. This is what I do when there is no retreat.
Most of the year, staying healthy is easy for me in Santa Monica. It gets hard on the road, which is where most people's habits go to die. So I built a four-day Barcelona trip where the healthy version is the default, not the exception, and I am publishing the plan before I go. If it works, you get a template you can copy for any city. If it does not, you get the honest version of why.
The base
Passeig de Sant Joan 4, at the foot of the boulevard by Arc de Triomf. I picked it by walking time, not by neighbourhood name. From the door: a CrossFit box in 3 minutes, Ciutadella park in 2, specialty coffee in 3, the ice bath in 9.
When the good choice is closer than the bad one, you make it half-asleep. That is the whole trick, and it is the same reason the best retreats put the yoga deck between your room and breakfast.
The morning protocol, every day
- 06:45. Wake, ginger-turmeric shot. Bottled from Veritas the night before, fresh from BeBo Cold Press when I pass it.
- 07:00. CrossFit. A different independent box each morning, chosen by how far I have to walk.
- 08:30. ILO Studios, sauna and cold plunge. Bailen 56.
- 09:45. Breakfast and the day's coffee.
CrossFit first, ice bath after. Never the other way round. Cold before training blunts the work you are about to do. Cold after it is the point.
The four boxes
- Day 1. CrossFit Eixample, Passeig de Lluis Companys 12. 3 minutes on foot. 18 euros.
- Day 2. The Hall, Roger de Flor 87. 7 minutes. Price on request.
- Day 3. KOR CrossFit, Ribes 23. 6 minutes. 18 euros.
- Day 4. Studio CrossFit, Provenca 529. 3 minutes by bike. 18 euros.
No chains. Four owner-run boxes, four different coaching styles, and I meet the owner at each one. Backups if a class is full: Condal Gracia (20 euros) and Alpha Link on Roger de Flor.
Coffee, ranked by distance
Satan's Coffee Corner inside Casa Bonay is the only specialty place open before the box, 07:00 daily. Three Marks on Ausias Marc opens 08:30 on weekdays, which lands exactly after the plunge. Nomad on Passatge Sert is the weekday afternoon stop and is closed at weekends. El Magnifico in El Born is the one I will walk 15 minutes for.
Food
Everything independent. Granja Petitbo and Faire for breakfast. La Pubilla in Gracia for a proper Catalan fork breakfast on day 3, Tuesday to Saturday only. Dinners: Bar Mut, Can Sole (open since 1903, closed Mondays), Berbena (reserve), and Xavier Pellicer for the finale, Wednesday to Saturday, reserve.
I checked every one of these against current hours. Two places I found in guides do not exist any more, and one has closed. Guides lie. Phone calls do not.
Afternoons
- Day 1. Bike through Ciutadella to Bogatell beach. Swim, beach volleyball.
- Day 2. Padel at CEM Nova Icaria.
- Day 3. The Rokka Studio ritual, sauna and plunge again, then a slow walk through Gracia.
- Day 4. Paddleboard at Barceloneta, AIRE Ancient Baths in El Born, then the Bunkers del Carmel hike for golden hour.
What it costs
- Boxes, four sessions: about 72 euros
- ILO Studios, three-session pack: 45 euros
- Rokka ritual: 42 euros
- AIRE baths: about 50 euros
- Padel and paddleboard: about 30 euros
- Coffee, shots, groceries: about 80 euros
- Breakfasts and dinners: about 430 euros
- Accommodation: 0 euros
- Total, per person: about 750 euros
Four days, no chains, no hotel. Under 200 euros a day for the healthiest week of the year. For comparison, the median mid-range retreat in our database runs 200 to 600 euros a night before you have eaten anything.
The directory
Forty-five places: every box, bath, cafe, restaurant, shop, and beach on this plan, with address, walking time from the base, hours, and cost. It is the spreadsheet I built to plan the trip. Take it.

What happens next
I will post the days as they happen, with what I ate, what I lifted, and what I would change. If I skip the plunge on day 3 you will read about it. That is the deal.
